Cape Hatteras Lighthouse: Lighting the Way for 150 Years

December 16, 2020 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm UTC+0

This year we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the one of the most iconic structures on the east coast. Join us for a day of virtual events including speakers, a re-lighting ceremony (live streamed), and special Happy Birthday messages for our beautiful Cape Hatteras Lighthouse from around the country.

The virtual celebration kicks off December 1st with the opening of a lighthouse themed virtual art show called Hatteras 150 hosted by the Dare County Arts Council. The show is guided by local OBX artists who share how the lighthouse inspires their work. View the virtual art show here:

On the 16th, visit the Cape Hatteras National Seashore or Outer Banks Forever Facebook pages to view the virtual event featuring:

  • David Hallac, National Parks of Eastern North Carolina Superintendent
  • Bob Woodard, Dare County Chairman and Outer Banks Forever Board member
  • Captain Matt Baer, Sector North Carolina Commander, U.S. Coast Guard
  • Kevin Duffus, historian
  • Bett Padgett, Outer Banks Lighthouse Society
  • A living history presentation of Augustin Fresnel, inventor of the lighthouse lantern
  • Additional park rangers and community members; and a tribute from lighthouses across the country.

A temporary exhibit, 150 Years of Light, a Photographic Tribute, will be available on-site at the America’s National Parks Bookstore on Hatteras Island beginning the week of December 14. The exhibit, available through spring 2021, highlights special and unique photographs of the iconic lighthouse over the years.
